Low cost/no cost solutions for struggling writers

Microsoft Word has become the dominant solution for copywriters (their clients all use it) and the preferred solution for many creative writers. Which can be hard news for writers in developing counties, for impecunious students. It don’t come cheap. The Good News is that a completely free solution is available, as I have described in my latest blog - software that provides access to the world of Microsoft Word/Office functionality, and it costs nothing.

Open Office

‘Open Office’ is a complete suite that does just about everything that Microsoft Office does – not just Word, but PowerPoint, Excel and more. It’s been around for years, is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.

I have checked it out myself and was incredibly impressed.

One good thing with apache open office is the outliner. It changes the letters or numbers used in the vertical outline very very easily. I use MS Word, but when I need to outline something, I load it into Apache writer just to do the outlining. For some reason, Word screws up outlining

I am a linux/OpenSource freak, and have been using OpenOffice.org/Libre Office since it was StarOffice in 1999. It has made such dramatic improvements in just the last 2 years.
My wife didn't even know that she was using OOO, until I told her. I had it set to save as .doc or .docx and files opened perfectly in her work computer.
Thanks for promoting this great program.
